Linux Mint Ambassadors tumblr
Ambassadors are Linux Mint users who communicate with their friends about the advantages of using Linux Mint. This project is already working on some other Linux distributions and has been very effective in order to make known Linux distributions. This project is also very functional in Free Software Events and Universities, where local ambassadors support FOSS events in their communities. This work is voluntary and driven by the desire to make free software more and more encouraged. (2012-present) — https://linuxmintambassadors.tumblr.com/
- Building from source on less common linux (2021/03/05 16:46)Building from source on less common linux:
- Do you or can you even, verify pgp signatures when downloading and compiling source code programs for less common linux distros? I don’t think you can.
- Is this safer or as safe as downloading binaries and verifying pgp?
Thanks.

Im working on a project in my personal time. I have a host machine and im trying to decide on the best OS.
Its primary purpose is to run 2 different windows 10 machines simultaniously on Oracle virtual box. Other than that, i might run a screen recorder, a vpn, web browser, and maybe a small tool like wireshark…. but thats pretty much it…. i basically need something SUPER LIGHT WEIGHT, with a community big enough to be able to google my way out of any issues! Suggestions super appreciated!!!
[link] [comments] via Linux 101 stuff. Questions are encouraged, noobs are welcome! - What distro and DE features are transferable? (2021/03/05 16:46)What distro and DE features are transferable?:
I’m switching from Win10 and looking for my perfect OS as a complete Linux noob. In the past few days I tried a couple distro DE combos, namely Manjaro XFCE, Ubuntu 20.04, Linux Mint Cinnamon, Elementary OS, Ubuntu Budgie and POP_!OS.
Most of these I only used for a couple of hours, so my experience with them are very limited and mostly based on the out-of-the-box looks and features. I know a lot of these are customizable and DEs are changable, but I don’t know to what extent. I really liked this 2 Ubuntu GNOME based ones:
POP for:
- the aesthetics: window animations and desktop appearance: especially the Super key ‘Show all’ layout
- Power saver mode
- Pop Shop
But I miss Budgie for:
- the Raven sidepanel
- Nemo file manager
Can I install these to one-another? If I were to simply install Budgie DE on POP, it would just replace the GNOME features, right? And let’s say, can all of these just be installed on e.g. Linux Mint or Manjaro?

[link] [comments] via Linux, GNU/Linux, free software… - Issues with my laptop (2021/03/05 15:46)Issues with my laptop:
Hello, I bought this laptop HP Omen 15 (AMD CPU) two days ago. I have installed Manjaro on it. When I launch CS:GO, I get 15FPS. On Windows, I was able to get >160 FPS with ultra settings on Battlefield 4 etc. Why is this happening? Is it not using my Nvidia GPU?
I also have a question about managing my laptop: this is my first time using GNU/Linux on a laptop. Can I disable GPU completely for power saving, tweak the CPU so it uses less power and runs cooler etc. Can I do these types of adjustments? Can I do manual fan control?
These are the questions I can’t find an answer for. Thanks for your help!

I’m on Arch, using Cinnamon as my DE. My controller is an Xbox 360 wireless controller, using the default xpad driver.
I’d like to open Steam in big picture mode when I press the xbox button. How do I do this?
Setting up a keyboard shortcut is easy through Cinnamon’s keyboard preferences, but it does not recognize when I press buttons on the controller.

Want to format my NVME so that I can use it with Linux, but dont see a quick format checkmarker anywhere, heard that doing a full format will shorten it’s lifespan. T

I have GPU: Intel Iris Plus Graphics G1 and GPU: AMD ATI Radeon 540X/550X/630 / RX 6
I think that on one of them the fans are running on full speed and my laptop is heating, so is there some simple way to switch to the other one when I play games?

(2021/03/05 08:46)I am experiencing freezes on Ubuntu (GNOME) with error "pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Unable to read/write to IOMMU perf counter.":
I installed Ubuntu an my desktop with an AMD Ryzen 5 2400g, and I have been experiencing consistent freezes that happen seemingly at random and need a reboot to fix. I have looked into it a bit and it seems that other people are having similar problems with ryzen cpus. I think the freezes are related to this error that I am getting (gotten from logs): “pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Unable to read/write to IOMMU perf counter.”
I have done multiple things to try and fix it, but nothing has worked. I am on the latest kernel (5.11.3). CPU virtualization is enabled in my mobo’s bios. My grub file (/etc/default/grub) looks like this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet splash pci=nommconf amd_iommu=on iommu=pt”
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“”
I think this is the error causing the crashes, but I’m not sure. I am also getting these errors according to the logs:
ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating named object [\_SB.SMIB], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20201113/dsfield-637)
ACPI Error: AE_ALREADY_EXISTS, During name lookup/catalog (20201113/psobject-220)
ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Failure creating named object [\_SB.SMIC], AE_ALREADY_EXISTS (20201113/dswload2-326)
kfd kfd: device 1002:15dd NOT added due to errors
kfd kfd: Error initializing iommuv2
kfd kfd: error required iommu flags ats 0, pri 0, pasid 0
I need help fixing the freezes and the errors, any help is appreciated.
[link] [comments] via Linux 101 stuff. Questions are encouraged, noobs are welcome! - wxPython Shared object file error (2021/03/05 08:46)wxPython Shared object file error:
Hi! Thank you for finding the time to read through my problem.
Im on ubuntu LTS 20.04, My python version was installed using linuxbrew (cause it installed 3.9.2 and linked it by itself when i was installing something, can’t remember what now), and my wxPython version in 4.1.1
I made a gui for youtube-dl a while back in wxPython, back then I was still daily driving windows and the script ran well. Now that I’m on linux its been a pain in my butt to get it running.
So the problem is that when I try to run the script (you can find it here its named “gui youtube-dl”) it throws an error.
Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/shalmon/gitclones/GUIYoutube-dl/gui youtube-dl.py", line 1, in
import wx File "/home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew/Cellar/python@3.9/3.9.2_1/lib/python3.9/site-packages/wx/__init__.py", line 17, in from wx.core import * File "/home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew/Cellar/python@3.9/3.9.2_1/lib/python3.9/site-packages/wx/core.py", line 12, in from ._core import * ImportError: libwx_gtk3u_core-3.1.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I googled the error but couldn’t find anything of use except this stackoverflow question which wasn’t much help either.
The libwx packages are installed as you can see in this screenshot I took in synaptic.
This could be a python problem, so I’m going to post this in r/learnpython as well, but I made a post here just in case.

Did you know that you can copy a file and paste it in a “File Open” dialog?
It magically write the path to the file in the location bar!
You juste press CTRL-V, that’s it! no need to click or select the location bar!
At least it work on my distro which is Linux Mint Cinnamon.
Does it work in all distros? Does it work in your distro?
