Linux Mint Ambassadors tumblr

Ambassadors are Linux Mint users who communicate with their friends about the advantages of using Linux Mint. This project is already working on some other Linux distributions and has been very effective in order to make known Linux distributions. This project is also very functional in Free Software Events and Universities, where local ambassadors support FOSS events in their communities. This work is voluntary and driven by the desire to make free software more and more encouraged. (2012-present) — https://linuxmintambassadors.tumblr.com/
  • Been using Manjaro for a bit. Today I got an error while booting up for some reason (2021/05/11 00:46)
Been using Manjaro for a bit. Today I got an error while booting up for some reason:

So I’ve been using this distro for a bit with no problems. Suddenly, now, I turned my machine on and I got a completely black screen with the message:

“[FAILED] Failed to start Light Display Manager.”

Is there anything in particular I am suppossed to do or should I just re-install Manjaro and start from scratch? If that is the case, is there anything in particular I may have done to mess up?

  • Mounting server via terminal/bash script (2021/05/11 00:46)
    Mounting server via terminal/bash script:

Hello! This is an offshoot of a previous question. I’m trying to set up a bash script to automate downloading new Bandcamp purchases to my NAS. I’ve got it most of the way set up - it works - but I realized I’ve only done it after I’ve mounted my NAS already through the file GUI. I’d like to add a command to the bash script to mount the NAS first.

Looking for information about how to do this I’ve seen a lot of stuff telling me to install Samba but since I’m able to access the NAS through the command line once it’s mounted it feels like I should be able to connect already?

    Thank you!

  • xfce whisker menu (the taskbar thing) randomly changed it's appearance (2021/05/11 00:46)
xfce whisker menu (the taskbar thing) randomly changed it's appearance:

Hello, I recently switched from windows to manjaro os and have been using it for a month without any issues.I do not know much about linux and operating systems in general.
Today for some reason the icon of the task bar (the start button thing in windows) changed from an icon i set to the picture of the xfce rat/mouse. The appearance of the menu that pops up when I press the super key also changed into a different layout.
My laptop is old and has some hardware issues (shut downs from overheating and other reasons) and this happened after one of those shut downs.

Is this something i should worry about? Is there something wrong with my computer? If yes, please let me know what I should do next.

  • Teamviewer connects but the window opens Tiny, need to find the corner and stretch every time (2021/05/11 00:46)
Teamviewer connects but the window opens Tiny, need to find the corner and stretch every time:

I’m not sure if this is a Teamviewer bug, or a display manager bug or what.

FWIW my install is Ubuntu 20.10 running LightDM+Cinnamon.

When Teamviewer connects to a remote PC it no longer opens a visible window, you need to find the tiny line representing the window and drag to expand

If you’re lucky enough to find it, life goes on as normal example

Any ideas? Maybe there’s a linux config file that needs to be modified for that application to set a default window size? All I know is that it hasn’t always done this, definately on Cinnamon. I used KDE previously and it happened there but I don’t recall if it was always like this on KDE (and Gnome before that).

But definately never started life like this.

Is standard input open for commands that doesn't require input:

I read somewhere that Whenever you execute a program/command at the terminal, 3 files are always open, viz., standard input, standard output, standard error. Is there any command to examine what streams is open for a command? (Something like strafe)

  • Any good WiFi adapters for Linux Ubuntu Laptops? (2021/05/10 23:34)
Any good WiFi adapters for Linux Ubuntu Laptops?:

I used a Tp Link (I do not know what the specific model was) for my laptop, which I bought like a year and a half ago and it worked completely fine until about a couple weeks ago. I’m not 100% sure if it’s the adapter, but the wifi on my computer just went out and if I replugged the adapter after like a good 30 secs to a minute it would go back on. I don’t have good wifi, but on my Nintendo Switch for example it works consistently fine without any problems. I think it’s a combination of my wifi being crappy and inconsistent, and possibly that I had that old adapter for so long? There’s no noticeable damage on the adapter so I’m not too sure however…

But if I should get a replacement, and it likely isn’t an issue with something else, what are some good options? (under $30-$50)

  • I made a thing for looking at system details: Osysinfo (2021/05/10 23:34)
I made a thing for looking at system details: Osysinfo:

    Here’s the link: https://github.com/ottop/osysinfo

Hello there, everyone in this subreddit.

I have now released my piece of software called Osysinfo. There are many tools to find information about your Linux system, but many of them go very deep into detail and you need to search for specific information from all of that. You also often need multiple entirely different commands for these different software that you need to remember.

Osysinfo is a CLI tool that aims to provide basic information within multiple areas of your system and allows you to easily filter what information you want to see through flags and options within those flags. Want to see everything it provides? No problem. Want to see only basic CPU information? It’s there. Want to see only your Kernel version? Osysinfo has got you covered.

As mentioned, it does not go extremely deep into detail and with this initial release it does not show certain information. Some notable omissions are as follows:

    - Disk information (likely coming soon)

    - GPU Information (coming eventually)

    - Motherboard information

    - USB information

    - PCI information

Just another repeat of the link in case you missed it: https://github.com/ottop/osysinfo

  • An Unpopular Opinion (2021/05/10 22:34)
    An Unpopular Opinion:

Arch Linux, the Reddit of distros. I don’t like it. I don’t inherently dislike the distro, or even most of the community, but I feel like it holds Linux as a whole back. So many people are content to just boot Arch or an Arch-based distro that it seems to breed complacency and prevent people from innovating in smaller distros. Why try and build up a different distro when I can just use Arch? Why work on more user-based repositories when I can just use the AUR? I dunno, just my two cents, lemme know what you all think.

(I’m not trying to bash Arch, I do actually like it.)

    What distros ship with Wayland?:

    Hello,

I have recently found out that I need to switch from Mint, to a Wayland supported distro for graphics reasons.

I know that Ubuntu 21.04 has it, but I would rather not use Ubuntu if possible. Are there any other Debian/Ubuntu based distros that come with Wayland and kernel 5.8+ out of the box? I have not been able to find a good place to find this information.

I have an ibm x3560 server with an LSI raid card, ‘LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 2108 [Liberator] (rev 05)’.

How do I view the configuration of the physical RAID array from Linux?

Perhaps a better question is, where can I download the “LSI Configuration Utility” mentioned in this link? I merely want to view the config without taking our XCP hypervisor down.

So I installed snap by typing

Just like the tutorials say, although when i go to find something, lets say blender using

    sudo snap find blender

I then get an error message

error: cannot list snaps: cannot communicate with server: Get http://localhost/v2/find?q=blender&scope=wide: dial unix /run/snapd.socket: connect: no such file or directory

  • the audio for two different programs will come out two different audio output channels AT THE SAME TIME (2021/05/10 20:46)
the audio for two different programs will come out two different audio output channels AT THE SAME TIME:

hello, ever since i reformatted my computer about a week ago, i have been having a really strange audio problem where the audio for two different programs will come out two different audio output channels AT THE SAME TIME

so i have my laptop connected to my TV via HDMI, and then i also have my headset connected to my laptop, and for whatever reason, ever since i reformatted and reinstalled ubuntu 20.10, i will have this problem where the audio for google chrome will come in through my headset, but then i will have vlc running in the background and i will watch a movie, and then the audio for vlc will come out the TV.

i was trying to fix this, and the only thing that seems to work is for me to go into the audio settings and switch the audio to “headphones-built in audio” then switch it back to my headset, then the audio will work but then it’s like the programs switch because then i can hear vlc but now chrome is coming through the tv, i can’t seem to make both come through my headset at the same time, and i have no idea what’s going on or what to do, what do you guys think?

    thanks

  • Simple GUI MIDI controller? (2021/05/10 20:34)
    Simple GUI MIDI controller?:

    Hi,

I tried the following in CSoundQt on Windows, but it starts getting clumsy, though it works. So I look for a simpler solution, which by accident should run on a Linux Notebook.

The idea is to control my Leslie MK 2101 via MIDI, while playing. It can be done by some switches from the backside, but yeah, it’s less than pretty to do.

As you can see the index values (inside the knobs, integers by nature) will be transmitted, while their meanings vary, are taken from some lookup-tables and displayed below each knob (rpm, seconds etc.). Most of the time these are ordered numbers, but can also be string values in some cases.

The reason why I’m not installing CSound and its required sibblings on the Linux notebook is simple: I never managed to compile successfully. Total dummie on this. Well, it may be from my trials about 20 years ago, when distributions still were quite for the experts …

However, scripting I can do. However, Perl Tk was a programmers nightmare to me, so perhaps GTK will be a similar experience? So if there’s a simple solution around, like a ready-to-use-configurable-MIDI-device-controller, I’d be more than happy to know about :)

    Thank you guys
